What is Film and Media Studies?
Deja Shanks earned her associate’s degree in communications from a UC satellite campus before graduating from the film and media studies program in December 2021.
“At the time, I didn’t know what I wanted to do. All I knew was that I wanted to do something in TV and movies, but I thought it was a wacky thing until I checked the UC website and saw the film and media studies program. I lost my job during the pandemic and decided to sign up in July 2020 – and have never looked back since,” Shanks said.
In the wake of the pandemic, all of Shanks’ classes were online, but that didn’t hinder his experience. “I really enjoyed my time in class and learning. The teachers taught with enthusiasm and really enjoyed what they were talking about. It amused me, especially since everything was brand new information .
Shanks completed an internship at the Cindependent Film Festival the summer before her senior semester during which she hosted film screenings around Cincinnati neighborhoods. “I really appreciated having this experience for someone who had no previous experience in this field. So for me, every little bit counts,” Shanks said.
She now works in marketing at the Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park where she creates trailers for upcoming shows (which an undergraduate Adobe editing class prepared her for) and curates programs for theater.
